It was a great day for Great Britain at the BUPA Edinburgh Cross Country event as they came away with many convincing top tens and a domination in the Junior women’s 4km race.
The Senior Men’s 8km saw GB led by Andy Vernon and Tom Humphries who finished in third and fourth respectively.
Vernon was in a sprint for the line with USA runner Booby Mack and Spaniard Ayad Lamdassem and only missed out on top spot by two seconds.
In the Women’s race, European Under 23 champions Jess Coulson once again proved her worth with a brilliant fourth place, but it was Ireland’s Fionnula Britton who took a comfortable victory by 16 seconds over the 6km distance
The 3km women’s race was dominated by the Ethiopians and kenyas as Genzebe Dibaba (ETH) Meseret Defar (ETH) and Linet Masai (KEN) took the top three places. GB’s Lisa Dobriskey came away with an encouraging seventh in a tricky race.
The Men’s Junior race(6km) was dominated by Europe as Dino Bosnjak from Croatia took a sprint finish victory from Belgium’s Isaac Kimeli.
GB’s Jonathan Davies came home in fourth place in another brilliant run for the home nations.
However it was in the Junior Women’s 4km where Great Britain showed their class as the took the top six places.
Emelia Gorecka took an easier than expected victory from Jessica Judd as she broke away within the first five minutes and cantered to the finish. They were followed by Rebecca Weston, the Clay sisters Alex and Booby and Annabel Mason in a dominant performance.
The result shows real strength ind depth at level and with the likes of Jenny Walsh still available for selection, a promising future for women’s distance running.
It was a great day in the end for GB as they finished second in the overall standing behind Europe.
In other Cross Country news, Olympic Triathlon bronze medalist and World Champion Jonathan Brownlee was beaten into third at the Yorkshire Cross Country Championships at Lightwater Valley.
