What is the world of football coming to?
In the last few hours, Southampton have sacked manager Nigel Adkins after two-and-a-half years at the club.
Southampton currently sit in 15th place, three points above the relegation zone after coming up last season.
Adkins’ last game for the club was a dramatic 2-2 draw with Champions League holders Chelsea who were 2-0 and cruising at one point in the game.
It begs the question of what were the owners thinking sacking Adkins as he has achieved miracles in his time in charge.
When he took over they were in the lower quagmire of League 1 and within two seasons he had turned them into a competitive Premier League side.
In his time at the club he won 67 of the 124 games as manager, an average over 50% and he only lost 32 games in all competitions.
He will be replaced by Argentine Mauricio Pochettino as manager.
Unfortunately this shows the cruel ruthlessness in the game of football. For Adkins it is a harsh way to end his fantastic tenure with the south coast side but he will be back at another club because he is a good manager.
For Southampton, only time will tell if their decision is right but if they fail, fans will look at this moment as the turning point.
