Winter Sports Success

With all the snow around in Britain, it make perfect time to reflect on some brilliant achievements by winter sports specialists this week.

At the European Championships in Sweden, Elise Christie won the 1500m gold in the speed skating.

Also in that race was Christie’s GB team-mate Charlotte Gilmartin who finished in bronze medal position.

For Christie, this is not her favoured event and sets her up nicely for her big one the 1000m on sunday, whilst she also has the 500m final on Saturday.

Elsewhere, former GB sprinter Craig Pickering, made the Bobsleigh World Championship squad, just a month after switching to the sport.

The former European 60m silver medalist turned to the sport after persistent injuries had hampered his progress in athletics.

He made his world cup debut last weekend with pilot John Jackson and they finished in 19th place.

However his form and rapid rise has convinced selectors to take him to the World Championships and he will partner Jackson in GBR 1.

The Full team for the men and women’s bobsleigh is as follows:

Men’s Two-Man:

  • GBR 1 – John Jackson and Craig Pickering
  • GBR 2 – Lamin Deen + one other

Women’s Two-Man:

  • GBR 1 – Paula Walker, Gillian Cooke
  • GBR 2 – Two from; Victoria Olaoye, Kelly Denyer Mica McNeill, Nikki McSweeney, Sarah Adams, Lucy Oneydero
  • GBR 3 – If GBR remain in top 22 by January 22nd, they could have a third team.

Men’s Four-Man:
